House Anjou

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coat of arms of the Anjou: the coat of arms of the Capetians with lily with the tournament collar as a badge of a younger line

The (older) house Anjou was a male line of the Capetian family . It comes from Charles of France (* 1226, † 1285), a younger brother of King Louis IX. (* 1215, † 1270), to whom he handed over the county of Anjou in 1246 .

Since Charles succeeded in eliminating the Hohenstaufen in southern Italy on behalf of the Pope , he became the progenitor of a dynasty in the Kingdom of Naples , which at times was also owned by the Kingdom of Hungary and the Kingdom of Poland :

When extinction in the male line was foreseeable, attempts were made twice (1380 and 1423) to inherit the family's southern Italian and southern French property through adoptions. In both cases, the current Dukes of Anjou ( Younger House of Anjou ) , a branch of the Capetian branch of the Valois , were the beneficiaries, in both cases they did not get a chance due to military force. In 1435 the older house of Anjou went out.
