Coat of arms of the House of La Roche

The house of La Roche is a family of the nobility of the Free County of Burgundy . The name refers to the Château de la Roche in the municipality of Rigney near Besançon . The family first appeared at the beginning of the 12th century and went out in 1693.

The house of La Roche gained importance through its activities during the Crusades , especially in the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade (1202-1204), when Constantinople was conquered, and the Latin Empire was established. Othon de la Roche († before 1234) was given fiefdoms in Greece, including Athens in particular , for which his son Guy I. de la Roche led the title of duke from 1260. With Guy II. De la Roche the line died out in 1308, the Duchy of Athens passed to people from other families.
