Ibelin , now Jawne in Israel , called Iamnia in the Roman Empire , has been a strategically important place since ancient times . In the 12th century, the time of the Kingdom of Jerusalem , a crusader castle stood here , after which an essential family for the kingdom was named. Ibelin is between Jaffa and Ascalon , near Montgisard and Ramlah .

Ibelin is not to be confused with the Arab-Israeli city of I'billin in the northern district .

In the first 50 years of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, Ascalon was still under Fatimid rule, and Egyptian armies invaded the area of the Crusaders every year from here. Ibelin Castle was built under King Fulko I between 1134 and 1141 to counter these attacks. The original castle had four towers.

The Ibelin family derived their origin from the Counts of Chartres . However, the actual ancestor of the family was Barisan , who received the rule and castle from Fulko in 1141. Barisan married Helvis von Ramlah, their children were Hugo , Balduin , Barisan, Ermengarde and Stephanie. The younger barisan came to be known as Balian . In addition to Ibelin, the family also owned Ramlah and Nablus , but they lost these properties to Saladin in 1187 while Balian was still alive . Saladin had the castle destroyed by 1191 at the latest, it was never rebuilt.

The Ibelin family survived and retained great influence among the kingdom's barons. In the 13th century they became masters of Beirut and had great influence in the Kingdom of Cyprus . The most famous Ibelin of this time are two lawyers named Johann von Ibelin .
