Balian from Arsuf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Balian von Ibelin (* 1239 ; † September 29, 1277 ) was Lord of Arsuf , constable of Jerusalem , Bailli of Jerusalem and a member of the noble family Ibelin .

He was the son of John of Ibelin , Lord of Arsuf , and Alice of Haifa .

In the spring of 1254 he received from King Ludwig IX. from France in Acre the sword line. In the same year he married Plaisance von Antioch , the marriage was annulled in 1258.

In 1258 Balian inherited the Arsuf rule from his father. In 1260 or 1261 he sold the rule to the Order of St. John and moved to Tripoli . In 1265 Arsuf was conquered by the Mamluks .

In 1261 he married Lucia von Chenechy, the daughter of Johann von Chenechy and Stephanie de Brie.

From 1268 until his death he was, like his father, a constable of Jerusalem. King Hugo of Jerusalem and Cyprus appointed him Bailli of Jerusalem in October 1276 . Balian was thus de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. This office was challenged by Charles of Anjou in 1277 , who appointed himself King of Jerusalem and sent Roger of San Severino to Acre as his Bailli. Balian initially refused to let Roger enter the city's citadel. When Roger von Karl, Maria von Antioch and Pope Johannes XXI. If the Order of St. John and John of Versailles, Patriarch of Jerusalem refused to intervene, he gave up his resistance to Roger and left him the citadel and city without a fight. Karl was proclaimed king.

Balian died in September 1277. Shortly after his death, his widow Lucia married Eudes Poilechien , the commander of the troops of Charles of Anjou in Palestine.
