Johann von Arsuf
Johann von Ibelin (* around 1211; † December 1258 ) was Lord of Arsuf and temporarily Bailli and constable of the Kingdom of Jerusalem . He was a member of the noble family Ibelin .
He was the son of Johann von Ibelin , Lord of Beirut , and his second wife Melisende von Arsuf . After the death of the father, his older brother Balian received the paternal rule of Beirut and Sidon , Johann received the maternal rule of Arsuf.
In 1236 he married Alice von Haifa , daughter of Rohard II von Haifa . With her he had two sons, Guido and Balian .
Johann participated in the crusade from 1239 to 1241 . On the mediation of Richard of Cornwall he tried to settle the civil war against the nominal ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem , Emperor Frederick II , or his governor Richard Filangieri , who was resident in Tire . The war soon escalated again and ended in 1243 with the conquest of Tire by the barons.
In 1241 he strengthened the fortifications of Arsuf.
1246-1248, 1249-1254 and 1256-1258 he was Bailli of Jerusalem. Like his father, Johann had a legal education and introduced some reforms to the kingdom's legal apparatus.
In early 1250, during the Sixth Crusade , when the Muslims withdrew troops from Palestine to defend Egypt , John took the opportunity and attacked Bet She'an . He devastated the nearby Muslim camp, captured 16,000 herd animals and captured an emir .
From 1251 until his death he was constable of Jerusalem.
1258 he mediated an agreement between the Order of Knights of Templar , Hospitaller and German knights , which regulated the mutual relations and ascribed disputes.
After his death, his son Balian von Ibelin succeeded him as Lord of Arsuf.
