Balian of Ibelin (Seneschal of Cyprus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Balian of Ibelin (* around 1250, † February 1301 ) was a member of the House of Ibelin and incumbent Seneschal of the Kingdom of Cyprus . He was one of the sons of Guido von Ibelin († 1255), Connétable of Cyprus, and Philippa Barlais.

Probably in 1286 Balian was entrusted with the office of royal seneschal by his nephew, King Henry II of Cyprus . Hardly anything else has come down to us about him. He died in February 1301, and his younger brother Philipp († 1318) succeeded him in office.

Balian was married to Alix, who belonged to the Armenian princely family of Lampron . They had four children:

  • Maria von Ibelin, ∞ with Ruben von Montfort († 1313), titular lord of Tire and Toron.
  • Isabella von Ibelin, ∞ with Johann von Ibelin († 1309), titular lord of Arsuf.
  • Guido von Ibelin († September 8, 1308), ∞ with Isabella von Ibelin († 1315).
    • Alix von Ibelin († 1386), 1st ∞ with King Hugo IV of Cyprus (1294–1359); 2. ∞ with Philipp von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen.
    • Margarete von Ibelin, ∞ with Guido von Ibelin († 1350/60), Seneschal of Cyprus.
  • Margaret of Ibelin, ∞ with Oshin of Korykos († 1329).
