Mary of Antioch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mary of Antioch or Antioch († after December 10, 1307) was the daughter of Prince Bohemond IV of Antioch from his second marriage to Melusine of Jerusalem , the daughter of King Amalrich II of Jerusalem .

Since the conquest of Antioch by the Mamluks in 1268 she lived in Acre . After Conradin's death , Mary claimed the title of Queen of Jerusalem , but the Haute Cour of Jerusalem rejected her claims to the crown. She lodged a formal protest against the coronation of King Hugo I of Jerusalem , the great-grandson of Amalrich II in the direct male line, and traveled to Rome to appeal the judgment of the Haute Cour to the papal curia. She achieved that her case was submitted to the Council of Lyons in 1274 , but there was also a decision against her. On the mediation of Pope Gregory X. , in March 1277, she sold her alleged claims to the crown of Jerusalem to Charles of Anjou . Charles of Anjou was thus an anti-king against King Hugo I of Jerusalem .
