Amalrich I (Cyprus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amalrich von Lusignan (also Aimerich , * 1145 ; † April 1, 1205 in Akkon ) from the House of Lusignan was from 1194 as Amalrich I King of Cyprus and from 1197 as Amalrich II King of Jerusalem .

Amalrich was a son of the crusader Hugo VIII of Lusignan , Count of La Marche , and his wife Bourgogne von Rancon.

He came to the Holy Land around 1174 , married Eschiva of Ramla, daughter of Baldwin of Ibelin , and entered the service of her aunt Agnes of Courtenay , mother of King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem . From 1175 to 1178 he was chamberlain of Jerusalem . In 1179 he became constable of Jerusalem . In 1193 his brother Gottfried von Lusignan gave him the county of Jaffa and Askalon . With the death of his brother Guido von Lusignan , he became king of Cyprus in 1194.

In 1197 he married Queen Isabella I of Jerusalem, widow of Henry of Champagne, and became King of Jerusalem by the right of his wife .

As part of the German crusade in 1198, he managed to agree a five-year armistice with the Muslims, which he owed essentially to the internal struggles between Saladin's brothers and sons over his inheritance. The armistice was disrupted by raids from both sides, but was extended for six years in 1204 when it became clear that the Fourth Crusade would not reach the Holy Land.

Amalrich died in 1205, shortly after his son and shortly before his wife. The Kingdom of Cyprus went to Hugo I , his son from his first marriage, the Kingdom of Jerusalem to Maria von Montferrat , Isabella's daughter from her marriage to Konrad von Montferrat .
