Mary of Montferrat
Maria von Montferrat , also called Maria la Marquise (* around 1192 , † spring 1212 ), was a queen of Jerusalem in her own right. She was the only daughter of Queen Isabella I from her second marriage to the Margrave Conrad of Montferrat . On her father's side, she came from the Aleramide family . Since her mother was married in 1192 to her first husband Humfried IV of Toron , from whom she was divorced against her will, Humfried's fatherhood would also come into consideration.
On the death of her mother in 1205, Mary became Queen of Jerusalem at the age of 13. Because of their underage, Johann von Ibelin , "the old gentleman of Beirut" , took over the reign of the country for them.
On September 14, 1210, Maria married the older French knight Johann von Brienne (* around 1169/74; † 1237) in Akkon , with whom she was crowned on October 2 in Tire . Her husband now took over the government of the country as her co-king. The wedding was arranged by the Haute Cour of Jerusalem and King Philip II of France . Their daughter Jolanthe was born in the spring of 1212, Maria died shortly afterwards of the consequences of childbirth. Her daughter became the new Queen of Jerusalem as Isabella II , and Johann von Brienne took over the reign for her.
