Barisan of Ibelin († 1150 ) was an important figure in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the ancestor of the Ibelin family . His name was also pronounced “Balian”, and he himself then referred to as Balian the Elder .

Life

Barisan probably came from northern Italy , but nothing is known about his life before he became constable of the county of Jaffa in 1115 . In 1134, when Hugo II of Le Puiset , Count of Jaffa, rebelled against King Fulk , Barisan sided with the king and soon gained an important role at court. Between 1134 and 1141 he was appointed lord of the newly built Ibelin Castle, which was located in Jaffa County between Jaffa itself and the fortress of Askalon , the latter still owned by the Fatimids . He also received the castle and rule of Mirabelwhich was carved out of Jaffa County. In 1148 Barisan inherited the rulership of Ramla through his marriage to Helvis, the daughter of Baldwin of Ramla . In the same year he took part in the conference of the leaders of the Second Crusade in Acre , in which the attack on Damascus was decided.

progeny

With Helvis von Ramla, Barisan had three sons and two daughters:

After his death the rule of Ibelin passed to his son Hugo, his widow Helvis married Manasses von Hierges , the constable of Jerusalem , with whom she held the dominions of Ramla and Mirabel until 1152 and only then left Hugo.
