Karl Martell (Hungary)
Karl von Anjou ( Charles d'Anjou ), called Martell (born September 8, 1271 , † August 19, 1295 in Naples ) was the titular king of Hungary .
He was the son of Charles II of Anjou , King of Naples and Jerusalem , Count of Provence , Anjou and Maine , and Mary of Hungary , sister of King Ladislaus IV.
He gained his first military experience in 1289 on a campaign in Sicily , which he undertook together with his father and Robert II of Artois against Frederick II of Sicily . A little later, his uncle Ladislaus IV died without any descendants, whereupon his father crowned him King of Hungary. The Hungarian nobility, however, had one of Ladislaus' cousins, Andreas III. Arpad , elected successor. Karl Martell was satisfied with the royal title and did not try to fight for the throne in Hungary.
On January 11, 1281, he married Klementia von Habsburg (* 1262, † 1293), daughter of the Roman-German King Rudolf I and Gertrud von Hohenberg in Vienna . Your children were:
- Karl Robert (* 1288 † 1342), King of Hungary
- Beatrix (* 1290 † 1354), ⚭ 1296 Johann II (* 1280 † 1319), Dauphin von Viennois ( house La Tour-du-Pin )
- Klementia (Clémence) (* 1293 † 1328), ⚭ 1315 Louis X. the brawler (* 1289 † 1316), King of France ( list of the Capetians )
Karl died shortly before his 24th birthday, presumably of the plague . He was buried at the side of his wife Klementia in the Cathedral of Naples .
