Jacob IV (Mallorca)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacob IV of Mallorca ( Catalan : Jaume IV de Mallorca ; * August 24, 1336 ; † February 1375 in Soria ), was a titular king of Mallorca from the house of Barcelona .

Jacob IV was the only son of King Jacob III. of Mallorca and his wife Constance of Aragón, daughter of King Alfonso IV of Aragón . Jacob's father was expelled from Mallorca in 1344 by his Aragonese cousins, who united the kingdom with the crown of Aragon . In the Battle of Llucmayor in 1349, the father tried to recapture the kingdom, but fell in the process and Jacob, along with his mother and sister, was captured by Aragon, which he first spent in Jativa and then in Barcelona . In doing so, he is said to have suffered an extremely unworthy treatment, which made his character brutal. In 1362 he managed to escape. On the mediation of Pope Urban V, he married the Neapolitan Queen Joan I of Anjou . With his wife and their relatives, however, he was mainly at odds and led a restless mercenary life. In the War of the Castilian Succession he fought in 1367 in the Battle of Nájera on the side of the black prince against Bertrand du Guesclin . Soon after, however, he was captured by Heinrich von Trastamara , who handed him over to Du Guesclin. Jacob was held prisoner by him in Montpellier until 1370 . Together with Duke Ludwig I of Anjou , he led a mercenary army against Aragón in 1374, but was defeated at Sant Cugat del Vallès . A little later, Jacob died in exile in Castile in Soria , where he was also buried in the Church of San Francisco.

Since he had no children with his wife, his rights in Mallorca passed to his sister Isabella, who was married to the Marquis of Montferrat . Isabella sold her rights to Duke Ludwig I of Anjou in 1378, who was adopted by Jacob's widow a little later.
