The county of Forcalquier was a lordship north of the Durance that emerged from part of the county of Provence .

Provence with the county of Forcalquier in the 12th century

In connection with the numerous divisions of the property of the count family of Provence, this part went to the brothers Wilhelm VI. († before 1067) and Gottfried II of Provence († 1065/67). But the idea of a separate rule from Forcalquier appears for the first time in a document from 1111 in which Wilhelm's daughter Adelheid (also Alix), widow of Ermengol IV von Urgell , called herself Countess of Forcalquier. After her death, rule and title passed to her two grandsons Guigo and Bertrand I (III.). A mandate from Emperor Frederick Barbarossa dated December 21, 1174 in favor of Wilhelm II (IV) confirmed his independent rule over an area that, by and large, comprised the dioceses of Embrun , Gap , Sisteron and Apt and was between the Comtat Venaissin and the Provence stretched along the Durance. Forcalquier owned a branch line of the Counts of Urgell for five generations until the area was reunited with Provence in 1208 by the Treaty of Aix (1192) and the marriage of Garsendes II of Forcalquier to Alfonso II of Provence.
