Fiedler was the son of a violinist from Austria who played in the Boston Symphony Orchestra . From 1909 he studied violin with Willy Hess in Berlin . In 1915 he became a violinist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra .
In 1924 he founded the Boston Sinfonietta , a chamber orchestra made up of members of the symphony orchestra. From 1930 he directed the Boston Pops Orchestra for almost fifty years . He also conducted the San Francisco Pops Orchestra regularly .

In 1977 Fiedler received the Freedom Medal , the highest civilian honor in the USA.
