Arthur Fiedler

Arthur Fiedler (born December 17, 1894 in Boston / Massachusetts , † July 10, 1979 in Brookline / Massachusetts) was an American conductor and violinist .

Fiedler was the son of a violinist from Austria who played in the Boston Symphony Orchestra . From 1909 he studied violin with Willy Hess in Berlin . In 1915 he became a violinist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra .

In 1924 he founded the Boston Sinfonietta , a chamber orchestra made up of members of the symphony orchestra. From 1930 he directed the Boston Pops Orchestra for almost fifty years . He also conducted the San Francisco Pops Orchestra regularly .

Fiedler recorded numerous, very successful records with the Boston Pops Orchestra, mostly light classical and traditional American folk music, but also symphonic arrangements of popular musicals or film scores . Most of them were compilations. One of the rare cases of a complete recording was the recording of Ernest Gold's film music for Stanley Kramer's literary adaptation The Ship of Fools (1965).

With the Boston Pops , Fiedler also recorded titles by the Beatles and Elvis Presley . The Arthur Fiedler Valentine CD features titles such as Michelle , And I Love Her , I Want to Hold Your Hand by the Beatles and Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley in symphonic arrangements, as well as In the Mood and Moonlight Serenade .

In 1977 Fiedler received the Freedom Medal , the highest civilian honor in the USA.
