Cityscape and architecture
City structure
Gap is located on the north-south axis of the N 85 , which once crossed here with the N 544 / N 94 . The N 544 coming from the west is now stepped to the D 944. This historically important crossroads is now the Place Jean Marcellin with the Rue de Mazel / Rue Elisée with the Rue de France. The old town of Gap is located around the Place Jean Marcellin, the cathedral built to the west of it and the Place de la République, a little further to the north, built in the early 20th century . Today's major roads run northwest and southeast around this historic city center. The urban development outside of it is already part of the urban landscape . The train station is a little northeast of the old town center.
Directly on the modern ring road south of the old town are the Hopital de Gap , to the north the Lycée Dominique Villars de GAP with the Bibliothèque du Pôle universitaire de Gap and to the east the ice rink Stade de Glace Alp Arena and the Musée museum départemental des Hautes-Alpes .
Gap is the seat of the diocese of Gap and Embrun with the cathedral church of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Arnoux , consecrated in 1895 (second patronage after Bishop Arnulf von Gap ) and the prefecture of the department of Hautes-Alpes.
The city has been connected to the railway network since 1875. The city is on the route from Veynes to Briançon . The main road N85 , a section of the Route Napoleon , leads over the Col Bayard mountain pass at 1248 meters into the Drac valley and to Grenoble .
The Spital Polyclinique des Alpes du Sud , formerly CHICAS, is located in Gap. Gap-Tallard Airport is about 12 kilometers south of the city . The 30-kilometer-long Gap Canal carries drinking water from the Drac through a canal tunnel under the Col de Manse mountain pass to the city and is used for irrigation in the Luyetal southwest of Gap.
Noteworthy structures
Only six secular structures are included in the local list of monuments. In addition to the oldest entry from 1906 with the cathedral , the second sacred building is the St-Cœur-de-Marie chapel (1990), built in 1854/57 ; plus twenty parks or gardens.

Other formative buildings within the old town ring such as the Piscine de la République are not on this list. The construction work to erect the building, which began in March 1914 according to plans by the architect Hippolyte Couttetar , was interrupted on August 2 due to mobilization for the First World War and could only be resumed on July 19, 1919. Due to the rise in construction costs due to the war and the subsequent inflation, the pool was only opened on July 5, 1924. From 1934 to 1936 Gap's first swimming pool was built and had direct access from the neighboring high school.
