Orpierre surrounded by rock faces

Orpierre is a French commune with 352 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Alpes department . The place is about 120 km south of Grenoble , near the municipality of Sisteron on the left bank of the River Céans . It belongs to the canton of Serres in the Gap arrondissement .

The former feudal estate of the " Prince d'Orange " has retained its medieval character. The climate is influenced by the Mediterranean, but due to the altitude of the place (around 700 m) it is temperate and, depending on the weather, cold.

Orpierre is surrounded by rocks and has developed into an interesting climbing area. Already in the immediate vicinity of the village there are rock faces that have been developed for climbing tours. The place is almost completely geared to the international climbing flock: there is a climbing shop, a tourist information office , a grocery store, a bar with a restaurant (on weekends pizza, otherwise salad and all kinds of international food from the freezer), two campsites (one is right next to the place and one a few kilometers away) and some gites, especially in the old town center.
