La Rochette is a French municipality with 466 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Hautes-Alpes in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Chorges and the Vallée de l'Avance municipal association .

geography

La Rochette is located in the Luye valley at the foot of the Puy de Manse mountain in the Écrins massif , 7.4 kilometers northeast of Gap , between the canton's capital La Bâtie-Neuve in the southeast and the neighboring municipality of Forest-Saint-Julien in the northwest. The Luye rises at La Bâtie-Neuve. The districts are at different heights. The lieux-dits ("place that is called ...") Manse-Vieille, Le Puy and Les Moutas are located in the mountains north of the town center, the lieux-dits Le Village (town center) and Les Guérins are above the valley but am At the foot of the Puy de Manse, the hamlets of Pont-Sarrazin and Petit Larra are located south of the town center in the Luye valley. Accordingly, the climate in the northern and central districts is cold in winter, there is a lot of snow and the bise blows frequently, in the valley of the Luye the climate is milder and corresponds to that of Gap.

history

La Rochette was already settled in Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486). The place Ictodurum was probably in Manse-Vieille. This theory is confirmed by finds from Gallo-Roman graves in Manse-Vieille. In the vicinity of the place was another lieu-dit with the name Route Soubeyrane (about "highest road"), which was mentioned in 1591 in a document. That could also be an indication. Ictodurum was on the Via Domitia halfway between Vapincum (Gap) and Caturigomagus ( Chorges ). Other theories relocate Ictodurum to La Bâtie-Vieille , La Bâtie-Neuve or even to Avançon .

The place name first appeared in a document in the 14th century as Rocheta , which in the Provencal language describes a small fortification.
