Town twinning
Serres has had a town partnership with the German town of Katzenelnbogen since 1990 .
geography
Serres is located on the banks of the Buëch River at the intersection of two national road connections:
- RD 1075 from Grenoble to Sisteron
- RD 994 from Pont-Saint-Esprit to the Col de Montgenèvre
There is also a train station on the Lyon – Marseille railway line .
The historic old town was built on the southeast slope of a rock, but the modern settlement spreads over the entire valley.
history
The castrum , the nucleus of the city, was first mentioned in a document in 739 in Abbo's will . In 988 the fortress and lands went to Cluny Abbey .
In the Middle Ages, the city developed into the most important place in the Buëch Valley thanks to its strategic location. A castle was built on the Pignolette rock, the town church in the 12th century. The castle was demolished again in 1633 on the orders of Richelieu . Industrial companies were founded here in the 19th century, but most of them disappeared again by 1900. In 1875 Serres got a connection to the railway.
