Alpine City of the Year is an award given to cities in the Alpine region for their special commitment to implementing the Alpine Convention , the most important international protection and promotion program for the Alpine region . The Alpine cities are organized in the international Alpine City of the Year Association. The association is an observer at the Standing Committee of the Alpine Convention.
Concerns and goals
The general assembly of the Alpine Town of the Year Association appoints an "Alpine Town of the Year" every year on the recommendation of an international jury. Members of the jury are Norbert Weixlbaumer from the International Alpine Conservation Commission CIPRA, Gerhard Leeb from Pro Vita Alpina and Antonio Zambon for the network of municipalities in the Alps .
The central concern of the Alpine City of the Year Association is to make life in the Alps sustainable and to implement the goals of the Alpine Convention in the respective member city. The idea for the Alpine Town of the Year award came from the publisher of Planet Alpen magazine , Gerhard Leeb from Villach.
The Alpine Cities of the Year work together in a non-profit association beyond the year in which they received the title of Alpine City of the Year . For example, a general meeting takes place twice a year. The first chairman of the association is currently Thierry Billet ( Annecy ), the second chairman is Bojan Sever ( Idrija ). Hubert Buhl ( Sonthofen ) and Patrizia Trincanato ( Bozen ) take on the role of assessors.
The five goals of the association are to strengthen awareness of the Alps, to involve the population, to strengthen bridges to the region, to shape the future sustainably and to expand cooperation with other cities. 60% of the Alpine population live in cities that want to take on their “great responsibility towards the surrounding area and the climate” as “the engine of economic development in the Alps”.
The office of the Alpine Town of the Year Association has been managed by the International Alpine Protection Commission CIPRA since 2003. The association also works with the municipal network Allianz in the Alps and with the Standing Committee of the Alpine Convention.
The Alpine City of the Year Association should not be confused with the Association of Alpine Cities , which is based in Bellinzona (Switzerland).
Services and costs
The association's services for the member cities include personal advice via e-mail and telephone, as well as the right to use the association's logo, participation and the right to vote at the general meetings to exchange experiences. There is also support for the conception of local projects and translation services. All documents of the association are published in the four Alpine languages. The tasks are coordinated by an office that also publishes a regular newsletter and annual report. The member cities pay an annual membership fee of 5000 euros for at least six years. The respective title-bearing city takes on an additional item of 2300 euros for the larger administrative expenses and organizes an impulse seminar in which it discusses its program and projects with the other cities. The “awarded” city is Alpine City of the Year for one year.
