Ermengol IV (Urgell)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ermengol IV of Gerb ( Catalan Ermengol el de Gerb ; † 1092 ) was a count of Urgell and iure uxoris a count of Forcalquier from the House of Barcelona . He was a son of Count Ermengol III. von Urgell († 1065) and his first wife Adalaiz.

Ermengol IV vigorously continued the expansion of his domain and brought almost the entire Baix Urgell under his control by conquering Agramunt and other castles. On March 25, 1067, Count Raimund Berengar I of Barcelona gave him Barberà Castle. At times he was in conflict with his vassals of Cabrera , which was settled in 1074. In 1089, Pope Urban II appealed to Ermengol to continue the battle of the Moors beyond the Ebro . Shortly afterwards, Ermengol had built Gerb Castle ( Comarca Noguera ), from which he wanted to conquer the nearby Balaguer . Before he had a chance, he passed away.

Around the year 1070 Ermengol had designated his brother-in-law, Count Wilhelm Raimund von Cerdanya , as a possible heir in the event that he himself remained without descendants. In his first marriage he was married to Lucia, who is already recorded for 1063. She was probably the mother of his first son Ermengol V († 1102), who succeeded him as Count of Urgell. His second wife was the Countess Adelaide von Forcalquier, first mentioned in 1087. Their son Wilhelm I († 1129) inherited their mother in Forcalquier.
