Ermengol V. (Urgell)

Ermengol V. von Mollerussa ( Catalan Ermengol el de Mollerussa ; † September 11, 1102 ) was a Count of Urgell from the House of Barcelona . He was a son of Count Ermengol IV of Urgell († 1092) and his first wife Lucia.

Ermengol V. followed his father, who died in 1092, in Urgell. On September 11, 1102 he led an army of 300 men against an army of the Almoravids at the village of Mollerussa near Lleida and was killed in battle. Based on the Latin name of the place of death (Maioricæ) , as it is called, among other things, in the Chronicle of San Juan de la Peña , it was often identified with Mallorca in ancient historiography . As early as the 16th century, Jéronimo Zurita felt compelled to rectify the situation.

Ermengol V was married to the Castilian nobleman María Pérez, daughter of Count Pedro Ansúrez , who had reigned in Urgell until 1109. The children from the marriage were:

• Ermengol VI. (* around 1095, † June 28, 1154), Count of Urgell.
• Estefanía (founded the Cistercian Abbey of Santa María de Valbuena in 1143 ); ∞ with Fernando García de Castro, 2. ∞ with Rodrigo González de Lara .
