House Cabrera

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The coat of arms of the House of Cabrera shows a billy goat (Catalan / Spanish: Cabra ) and is first documented for Ponç II. Guerau in the 12th century. It is now the coat of arms of the municipality of Santa Maria de Corcó.

The Cabrera house was a family of the Catalan nobility, traceable since the early 11th century. The family is named after their ancestral castle Cabrera, located near today's town of Santa Maria de Corcó in the Comarca Osona .

history

The progenitor of the house was a certain Gausfred, who was documented as lord of the castle of Cabrera (Gauzfredi ex castro Caprerensi) in an act by Bishop Wilfried von Besalú in 1017 . His presumed son Guerau I married the heir to the Vice Count Amat, whereby the house came into the possession of the Vice County of Girona , which in turn was a fiefdom of the Counts of Barcelona . The vice-count's title was then transferred to all possessions of the Cabrera, which was expanded by the marriage of Ponç I to the castle of Àger ( Comarca Noguera ), which was in the county of Urgell .

The Cabrera family had established themselves among the leading feudal nobility in Catalonia in the 12th century. Ponç II. Guerau († 1162/63) had reached high dignity at the court of Emperor Alfonso VII of León-Castile . In the 13th century the family had acquired an inheritance claim to the powerful county of Urgell, which Guerau IV († 1228) tried to enforce by force, thus triggering an almost one hundred year feud between his family and the Crown of Aragon .
