Wilfried of Besalú

Wilfried ( Catalan Guifré ; † before 1054 ) was the first and only bishop of the short-lived diocese of Besalú from the House of Barcelona . He was a younger son of Count Bernard I Taillefer († 1020) and his wife Toda.

In 1017 Wilfried traveled with his father to Rome to ask Pope Benedict VIII to establish a diocese for the county of Besalú , which was to be occupied with Wilfried as its first bishop. The county was home to some of the most important monasteries in Catalonia , but with their parishes the dioceses of Vic , Girona and Elne within the church hierarchywere subordinated. By establishing his own diocese and occupying it with one of his sons, Count Bernard I hoped for greater independence in church politics. The Pope granted the request and also approved Count Bernard's request to convert the women's convent of Sant Joan de les Abadesses , which was allegedly in a scandalous state, into a choir for the new diocese, which Wilfried has now also been entrusted with. In 1017, Count Bernard and Wilfried confirmed the foundation of the diocese and the conversion of the monastery by means of a papal bull in two documents.

The diocese of Besalú turned out to be very short-lived in the end, as the bishops of Vic, Girona and Elne refused to accept a reduction in their official districts in his favor. Only the Count's power of Bernard I was able to put a stop to their claims, which however fell away with his death in 1020. The diocese of Besalú was in fact dissolved again, as the parishes of the county returned under the authority of their ancestral dioceses. Wilfried died shortly before or in the year 1054, as a new abbot of Sant Joan de les Abadesses was named that year.
