Teresa d'Entença

Teresa d'Entença († October 28, 1327 in Saragossa ) was a Countess of Urgell and Aragonese Queen Mother. She was the elder daughter of Baron Gombau d'Entença († 1304/08) and Constança d'Antillón; her younger sister was named Urraca.

Teresa inherited the Barony of Alcolea and various castles in the Kingdom of Valencia from her father . In 1314 she was determined by her maternal great-uncle, Count Ermengol X. von Urgell , to be his testamentary heir, on the condition that she would be married to the Aragonese heir to the throne Don Alfons († 1336). The county of Urgell had in fact been in the possession of the Crown of Aragon since 1276 , after King Peter III. forcibly annexed them. The last count wanted to legally legitimize this situation by marrying his heiress with the future king in order to end the generation-old dispute over Urgell.

The wedding was celebrated on November 10, 1314 in Lleida , the marriage contract is dated November 11. The children from the marriage were:

  • Alfons (* 1315, † 1317).
  • Konstanze (* around 1318, † 1346); ⚭ 1336 with King James III. of Mallorca (1315-1349).
  • Peter IV. (* 1319, † 1387), King of Aragón, King of Valencia, King of Sardinia, Count of Barcelona and King of Mallorca.
  • Jakob (* 1321, † 1347), Count of Urgell.
  • Friedrich (* 1325, died young).
  • Isabella (* October 23, 1327, † October 1327).
  • Sancho (* October 23, 1327, † October 24, 1327).

Teresa had written her will on October 20, 1327 in Saragossa and died shortly afterwards on October 28 after the birth of twins, just a few days before her father-in-law died in November of that year and her husband succeeded the kingship as Alfonso IV could. She was buried in the Franciscan convent in Saragossa. With her death, the county of Urgell could now also de jure be united with the crown property and given to her second son the following year.
