from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ermengol III. that of Barbastro ( Catalan Ermengol el de Barbastre ; * June 1032 , † 1065 in Barbastro ) was a Count of Urgell from the House of Barcelona . He was a son of Count Ermengol II of Urgell († 1038/39).

The first years of his rule Ermengol had stood under the tutelage of his mother Velasquita "Constança", who on April 4, 1048 sold the property rights to the valleys of Andorra to the diocese of Urgell in his name . According to the deed on the sale, he was fifteen years and ten months old at the time. After his personal seizure of power, he had allied himself with Count Raimund Berengar I of Barcelona against Count Raimund Wilfried von Cerdanya . In 1064 Ermengol took part in the campaign against the Moors initiated by Pope Alexander II , which historians often describe as a "pre-crusade" . After the conquest of Barbastro , he was appointed governor by King Sancho Ramírez of Aragón . When the Moors recaptured the city the following year, Ermengol was killed in battle. He was buried in the Abbey of Sant Pere von Àger.

Ermengol was successively married to Adalaiz (named 1036), Clemencia (named 1059) and Sancha of Aragón (named 1065 and 1072/73). The latter was a daughter of King Ramiro I of Aragon . The first marriage resulted in two children:
