Pope John XIX dies in October . after eight years of pontificate in Rome. Theophylact III becomes his successor at the age of 18. von Tusculum, Count of Tusculum, elected. According to the monk Rodulfus Glaber , he is only eleven years old. The nephew of Benedict VIII and John XIX. takes the name Benedict IX. on. Within a very short time he makes himself hateful for his dissolute life and acts of violence.
