Bezprym (also Bezprem , Wezprem * 986 , † 1032 ) was from 1031 Duke of Poland from the noble family of Piast .

Life

Bezprym was the eldest son of King Bolesław I from his second marriage to a Hungarian princess, probably a daughter of Gézas . Bezprym's rare name appears to be of Slavic , not Hungarian, origin. The sources are silent about Bezprym's fate after the divorce of his parents in 987. According to one hypothesis he was a monk in Pereum (999), according to another he lived in Hungary (Veszprém). After the death of his father in 1025, who had chosen his son Mieszko II from his third marriage to Emnilda as his successor and sole heir, Bezprym took advantage of the desperate situation his half-brother put the Kingdom of Poland through wars with all its neighbors and conflicts with the Had brought aristocratic opposition to the realization of his inheritance claims. In 1031, with the help of Russian troops and in alliance with Emperor Konrad II, he forced his half-brother, King Mieszko II, together with his youngest brother Otto , to flee to Bohemia . As the successor to Mieszko II, he renounced the crown and crown insignia, which he delivered to Konrad II. Since Bezprym was murdered in 1032, Mieszko II was able to return to the throne, but had to submit to Konrad II in 1033 and come to terms with the division of his inheritance with his relative Dietrich and brother Otto.
