Events

  • Campaign of Barbastro - prototype of the crusades : In 1063 Pope Alexander II called for a campaign to conquer the Spanish fortress town of Barbastro from the Moors . An international Christian army of French, Burgundians, Italian Normans, Catalans and Aragonese united in Girona in the spring of 1064 , moved to Barbastro and conquered the city after a short siege. The city is plundered, the inhabitants massacred, the rule of Barbastro is given to Count Armengol III. Surrendered by Urgell, the main army returns home with rich booty. In the spring of 1065 , the Moors recaptured the city.
  • 1066 : Battle of Hastings , conquest of England (until 1071 ) by Duke William of Normandy, with the defeat and death of the last Anglo-Saxon King Harold II.
