Byzantine Empire
- April 13th : The Byzantine Emperor Basil II provides the rebel army of his former general Bardas Phokas on the Asian side of the Hellespont near Abydos . Bardas Phokas dies on the battlefield, his severed head is brought to Constantinople . His widow then releases the captured Bardas Scleros , who makes peace with Basil in October and renounces his claim to the throne.
- November 3 : Bardas Phokas' son Leon has to surrender in Antioch on the Orontes in November and is banished. His brother Nikephoros Phokas Barytrachelos , who fought with Bardas Scleros, is pardoned.
- Byzantium under Basil II comes into conflict with the Bulgarians as they expand in the Black Sea area .

- Emperor widow Theophanu undertakes without her son Otto III. an Italian procession with the primary aim of praying for the salvation of his soul on the day of her husband's death.
France
When Archbishop Adalbero of Reims dies on January 23, the French King Hugo Capet , Arnulf , the illegitimate son of Lothar , elects to be his successor as Archbishop of Reims in order to separate him from the Carolingian coalition with the rebellious Duke Charles and dissolve him to pull his side. But Arnulf opens the city gates in August and hands over the coronation city of Reims to Karl. This greatly strengthens Karl's position, but he fails to underpin his claim to the throne with an election and coronation in Reims.
