Osdag

Osdag († November 8, 989 ) was Bishop of Hildesheim from 985 to 989 .

Like his successor, he probably came from the Ricda clan . During his term of office, the Gandersheim dispute broke out on the question of whether Gandersheim should belong to the Hildesheim or the Mainz diocese , from which the rights of the respective bishops are derived. The cause of the dispute was the question of who the Emperor's daughter Sophia , the sister of Otto III. , should dress. She did not only want to receive the nun's veil from Hildesheim Bishop Osdag and turned to Willigis, the Archbishop of Mainz. In order to defend his right as a diocesan bishop , Osdag had Theophanus and the royal child Otto III. set up his bishop's seat next to the altar. The threatening escalation of the dispute could be avoided by the fact that both bishops were to dress up Sophie, while the rest of the Osdag took on the dressing alone.

Osdag made little prominence in imperial politics.
