Gerdag († December 5, 992 in Como ) was Bishop of Hildesheim from 990 to 992 .

Life

He probably came from Count Ricdag's clan and was probably a nephew of his predecessor Osdag . He belonged to the cathedral chapter in Hildesheim and was most recently cellarius . Possibly he was also canon in Magdeburg .

Soon after the death of his predecessor, Gerdag was elected bishop. Archbishop Willigis of Mainz obtained the consent of Empress Theophanu for this, which at that time was responsible for Otto III. ruled. Gerdag was consecrated on January 19, 990, probably in Heiligenstadt, in the presence of the king by the Archbishop of Mainz.

The bishop supported the Hilwartshausen monastery founded by his family . He was present at the farm day in Grone 992. The king confirmed the protection and immunity of the diocese in a diploma. During his short term in office, the dispute between the diocese and Gandersheim Monastery played no role. The bishop donated a farm and more land to the diocese from his property.

Gerdag traveled to Rome via Reichenau Monastery in 992 and died on the return journey in Como. His body was dismantled into four individual parts and transferred to Hildesheim. There he was buried in Hildesheim Cathedral in the presence of Archbishop Giselher von Magdeburg .
