The Rödeser Berg near Nothfelden is 379  m above sea level. NHN high elevation of the Habichtwald mountainous region in the north Hessian district of Kassel .

geography

location

The Rödeser Berg is located in the Habichtswald Nature Park 2 km northwest of Nothfelden and 2.6 km south of Niederelsungen , which belongs to Wolfhagen , and 3.1 km (as the crow flies ) west-southwest of Oberelsungen , which belongs to Zierenberg . The western slopes of the wooded elevation stretch in the southwest in the valley of the Erpe and its eastern slopes in the Dase tributary .

Together with the Warteberg (approx.  419  m ), the Burgberg ( 334.5  m ), the Heidelbeerenberg (approx.  398  m ) and the Stromberg ( 362.2  m ) and their foothills, the Rödeser Berg forms the approx. 10.5 km² large Elsbergrücken between the Wolfhager district Elmarshausen and Breunaer district Rhöda . This landscape, together with the neighboring low mountain ranges Großer Bärenberg ( 600.7  m ), Ofenberg ( 372.5  m ) and Isthaberg ( 523.1  m ), defines the landscape of the northeastern Wolfhager Land, which is characterized by high relief energy.

Natural allocation

The Rödeser Berg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group West Hessisches Bergland (No. 34), in the main unit Ostwaldecker Randsenken (341) and in the subunit Wolfhager Hügelland (341.3) to the natural area Elsbergrücken (341.31). The landscape drops to the east into the Elsunger Senke natural area (341.32), to the south it flows into the Altenhasunger Graben natural area (341.33), and to the west it descends into the Ehringer Senke natural area (341.30).

Ecological importance

flora

The ridge is planted with deciduous forests and individual coniferous forests. Several stands of spruce in the summit areas have recently fallen victim to storms. Douglas firs have now been replanted in the peripheral areas of these areas, which are largely in secondary succession. Old wood stocks with strong trees are rare, especially in private forests, and are more likely to be found in the northwestern area.

The near-natural forest cover with deciduous trees of different ages is the result of ecologically oriented forest management over the past decades. This nature-oriented usage practice, together with the small-scale soil and climatic conditions, the water features and the seclusion, form the extremely favorable framework for a diverse flora and fauna.

fauna

The Rödeser Berg has an important stepping stone function (e.g. Reinhardswald - Escheberger Wald - Rödeser Berg - Langer Wald - Kellerwald) for forest-related animal species. It is located in the middle of two bird flight lanes (1st: Beverungen - Warburg - Bad Arolsen - Korbach; 2nd: Trendelburg - Oberelsungen - Wenigenhasungen) and directly between four breeding and resting areas of local / regional importance.

Mammals

The Rödeser Berg and its surrounding forests represent a habitat for numerous mammal and bird species, which have their feeding and breeding grounds there:

  • Lynx (suspicion)
  • Wild cat
  • Pipistrelle
  • Rough-skin bat
  • Mosquito bat
  • Great mouse ear
  • Fringed bat

Birds

The following 49 species use the area (including Erpetal) as breeding ground (excluding birds of prey): Carrion crow, blackbird, white wagtail, treecreeper, tree pipit, blue tit, chaffinch, jackdaw, bullfinch, blackcap, jay, kingfisher, magpie, blue flycatcher, garden warbler, Golden hammer, gray woodpecker, greenling, green woodpecker, crested tit, dunnock, stock dove, grosbeak, rattle warbler, nuthatch, small woodpecker, great tit, common raven, cuckoo, mistle thrush, middle woodpecker, black woodpecker, song thrush, summer golden cockerel, starling, goldfinch, common sand elder, Quail, treecreeper, tawny owl, long-eared owl, dipper, willow tit, wren, chiffchaff.

The honey buzzard breeds there with probably three pairs. For the red kite , the Wolfhager Land with its island-like forest tops forms an excellent breeding area. In the vicinity of the planned wind power areas, five pairs breed on an area of 13.5 km². Two pairs breed at a distance of about 1200 m from the planned wind turbines.

The following species were observed foraging for food: gray heron, great crested grebe, mandarin duck, house martin, Egyptian goose, barn swallow, buzzard (hibernating guest), tufted duck, great egret (hibernating guest), mallard, eagle owl. The black stork has been using the area continuously for many years as a food visitor and flies over the forest to hunt in the wetlands. For the years 2005 to 2009, eyrie places in the Escheberg Forest (near Breuna) were found. The exact eyrie locations have not been known since 2010. However, they should still be in the Escheberg Forest or in the forest island described here. The cultural landscape around Wolfhagen has an overall high occurrence of prey and is considered a well-frequented section for bird migration as well as a resting and feeding place, for example for the crane (Grus grus). In addition to the red kite (in the order of their frequency), the common griffins that occur regularly in this section of the landscape include buzzard (Buteo buteo), kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), sparrowhawk (Accipiter, nisus) and goshawk (Accipiter gentilis). Honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), tree falcon (Falco subbuteo) and, more recently, black kite (Milvus migrans) use the Wolfhager Land as feeding and breeding grounds.

The results of the species mentioned were recorded on the one hand in a documentary film by students from the University of Kassel. On the other hand, the aforementioned nature conservation statements are documented in a 46-page report with numerous images, data and facts.

Rödeser Berg wind farm

Anemometer mast on the Rödeser Berg during construction

Stadtwerke Wolfhagen planned the construction of four Enercon E-101 wind turbines with a hub height of 135 m, a rotor diameter of 101 m and a nominal output of three megawatts each. The Rödeser Berg or its vicinity, the Wartheberges (Wolfhagen community wind farm) were discussed as locations. The costs for the wind turbines totaled 20 million euros. Critics complain that the realization of the wind farm project would result in the direct destruction of the habitat of a number of protected species. A non-partisan citizens' initiative (BI) Wolfhager Land - No wind power in our forests was founded years ago against the project and shows alternatives for the Rödeser Berg location.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology built the 200 m high Rödeser Berg wind measurement mast for research purposes .

District President Walter Lübcke handed over the building permit for the wind farm to the project participants on December 17, 2013. He said u. a. at the handover: "... to the best of our knowledge and belief, the decision is legally secure". After a five-year planning period, the project entered the construction phase in 2014. A citizens' energy cooperative is contributing part of the investment sum of 20 million euros.

The citizens' initiative Wolfhager Land - No wind power in our forests "... protests fiercely against the granted building permit for the construction of a wind farm on the Rödeser Berg." In its statement, the initiative announces further resistance.

The Rödeser Berg wind farm was inaugurated at the end of March 2015. Since the wind farm is now in operation, the citizens' initiative announced at the end of April 2015 that it would not use any further legal remedies.
