Wind measuring mast Rödeser Berg

Rödeser Berg with the wind measurement mast

The Rödeser Berg wind measuring mast is a 200 meter high, guyed wind measuring mast in a steel framework construction on the Rödeser Berg between the Wolfhagen districts Niederelsungen and Nothfelden with a square cross-section, which is used by the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE) for wind measurements. The wind measuring mast is located in a commercial forest area , which was predestined by wind breaks (especially by hurricane Kyrill ) and was also chosen because of the high wind yields to be expected. The tower is the second tallest structure in North Hesse .

Construction phase

Wind measuring mast under construction

Contrary to the initial assumptions about completion by the end of June 2010, it took until the end of November 2011 to complete the wind measurement mast.

The construction of the tower was divided into two construction phases. In the first section, the tower was built by a team of specialists with the help of a special crane that brought the tower segments into position. At the end of August a height of 40 m was reached. In the second week of November, a height of 100 m was finally reached. In the second construction phase, the remaining 100 m were completed by the end of November 2011 with the help of a helicopter .

Since the construction site for the wind measurement mast is located within a forest area, the corresponding tower segments could not be delivered with special transporters, but had to be assembled on site.

After the wind measuring mast, four wind turbines were also erected on Rödeser Berg , which could already be connected to the power grid in 2014.

use

The Rödeser Berg wind measurement mast is intended to help identify suitable locations for wind turbines . The Fraunhofer IEE researched the wind energy potential in Germany as part of the BMU's inland wind energy use research project .

With its 200 m height, the wind measuring mast will not only collect reliable data for the Rödeser Berg wind location, but also help to develop correction algorithms for ground-based wind speed measurements with the help of modern laser technology, which in the future could make the cost-intensive and possibly invasive erection of a measuring mast superfluous. Lidar technology will also be used for these measurements .

The data collected by the wind measurement mast is made available to the Wolfhagen municipal utility by Fraunhofer IEE free of charge. This data is also used to check the profitability of the public wind farm planned by the municipal utility on the Rödeser Berg. This community wind farm is intended to cover up to 70% of the municipality's energy needs and is an important component of the goal pursued by the municipal utilities and politicians of producing 100% of the electricity consumed by private households in their own urban area. Further measures are solar systems, biogas and wood gasification systems as well as the modernization of the partly very old half-timbered houses with advanced thermal insulation .

criticism

The criticism of the location of the wind measuring mast focuses particularly on species protection and nature conservation concerns. Wildcats and other protected species should live in this forest area , the habitat of which may not be disturbed, damaged or destroyed according to Article 12 in conjunction with Annex IV of Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) . The evidence of the existence of some of the animal species listed has not yet been provided. Individuals report that they have sighted the lynx . These sightings only happened after the building project became known and by individuals without witnesses present. An investigation by the Senckenberg research station for limnology and nature conservation on a hair sample is cited as evidence of its existence .

Contrary to the fears when erecting the wind measurement mast, neither the mast nor the wind turbines that were built later drove the wildcat out of the area permanently. Animals were spotted again on Rödeser Berg in 2016.

At the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament ( PETI one was) in October 2010 input directed, which was debated and voted on. The city councilor of the Wolfhag Greens, Peter Kranz, was allowed to comment personally on the petition on October 4, 2011 in Brussels. The main aim of the petition is to carry out an environmental impact assessment . However, the EU Commission has so far not seen any evidence of violations of EU nature conservation law in its opinion for the Petitions Committee, since the area is not a protected area according to the important Habitat Directive 92/43 / EEC and is also of little importance for migrating or resting birds.
