France
- March 30th : Baldwin IV, only 10 years old , becomes the new Count of Flanders after the death of his father Arnulf II .
- May 21 : Ludwig V , the last West Franconian ruler of the Carolingian dynasty , dies at the age of around 20 after a hunting accident without leaving any descendants.
- July 3 : Hugo Capet becomes king of the west of France . The beginning of the rule of the Capetians is considered to be the founding date of the Kingdom of France . Ludwig's uncle Karl is ignored with the argument that, as Duke of Lower Lorraine, he was a vassal of a foreign ruler and that he had entered into an inappropriate marriage.

Byzantine Empire / Principality of Kiev
