Southern and Central Europe
- Emperor Otto II. Leads from Salerno from his campaign against the Kalbite under Emir Abul Qasim continued that since the death of Pandulf I always come up in southern Italy . In March he begins the siege of Taranto in Apulia . Here he takes on the title of Romanorum imperator augustus , the emperor of the Romans .
- July 13th / 15th : In the Battle of Crotone in Calabria , Emir Abu l-Qasim is killed , but Emperor Otto II suffers a devastating defeat, which has far-reaching consequences in the empire because of the subsequent loss of imperial authority. However, the Saracens did not take advantage of their victory and instead withdrew to Sicily . Otto retires to Rome via Capaccio , Salerno and Capua .

- Erik the Red is banned from Iceland for three years for murder . He then decides to look for a country in the west that Gunnbjörn Úlfsson had sighted decades earlier . After the Icelandic saga , he spent the next three years in Greenland , exploring its coasts.
