- 953 : After the numerous uprisings of his brothers, Otto the Great elevates his younger brother Brun to Archbishop of Cologne and Duke of Lorraine ; Beginning of the Ottonian-Salian imperial church system , which in the long term led to the investiture dispute .
- 953: The ailing Roman Rhine bridge at 310 near Cologne is demolished. It will take more than 900 years before a permanent bridge over the Rhine near Cologne is built again in 1855 .
- Otto I the Great, victorious on Aug. 10 955 over the army of horsemen of Hungary in the Battle of Lechfeld (in Augsburg ). This is the end of the more than 50 years of incursions into Hungary.
