Berthold I. (Breisgau)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berthold I († July 13, 982 ), known as Bezzelin, was probably the first count from the Zähringer family and from 962 until his death he was count in Breisgau and Vogt of Basel . He also had possessions around Teck Castle and in the Baar around Villingen .

Berthold probably came from the line of Count Palatine Berchthold II or his brother Erchanger from the Alaholfinger family . Based on accumulations of names, in particular with regard to the name Berthold , and largely identical county rights, it is assumed that the Zähringer came from the Alaholfingern and based their power on a blood law . Berthold's brother was probably the Basel bishop Adalbero (before 999-1025).

Berthold was a supporter of Emperor Otto II and most likely went with him to the battle of Cotrone , where he could have found his death on July 13, 982. An excavation document according to which a Bezzelin was supposed to list twelve out of 70 armored horsemen in 981 suggests that the Bezzelin named in it was Berthold I von Zähringen, as such a troop raising was directly related to Otto II's Italian campaign . and primarily the southern German nobility was represented among the companions of Otto II. Various documents speak of the death of Count Bezelin in connection with the battle. Thus, the assumption that Berthold I found his death there is not far from being.

Around 990 another Berthold appeared in the sources as Count im Breisgau , whose nickname this time is Birchtilo . This was probably Berthold II , the son of Berthold I.
