Central Europe
- Emperor Otto II leads a campaign against Bohemia , to which the rebellious Duke Heinrich the quarrel has fled. In August, Duke Boleslav II of Bohemia submits . In the meantime Heinrich has allied himself with Heinrich of Carinthia and Bishop Heinrich I of Augsburg for the "uprising of the three Heinriche" and occupied Passau .
- Reginar IV and his brother Lambert received their hereditary property back from Emperor Otto II except Mons . He also transfers the Duchy of Lower Lorraine to Karl , who is in conflict with his brother, the West Franconian King Lothar . Lothar sees this as a hostile act.
Eastern Europe
- The Bulgarian Tsar Boris II succeeded in escaping from captivity in Constantinople together with his brother Roman. On the Byzantine- Bulgarian border, however, he died under unexplained circumstances. Roman becomes Tsar of Bulgaria . He is supported by the Komitopuli .
- In the fight between the two brothers Jaropolk I and Oleg Svyatoslawitsch the latter is killed. Jaropolk, Grand Duke of the Kievan Rus , turns against his other brother Vladimir I and expels him from his principality, Novgorod . Vladimir flees to Norway.

- With the final victory over Amlaíb, Kenneth II secured rule over all of Scotland after a six-year reign .

- Former Turkish military slave Sabuktigin founded in eastern Iran, the dynasty of the Ghaznavids .
North africa
- around 977: The Berber tribe of the Magrawa expels the Midrarids and takes control of Sidschilmasa .
