- Heinrich the brawler returns from his captivity in Ingelheim to his Duchy of Bavaria . He immediately continued the conflict against Emperor Otto II . Heinrich not only put his royal seat of Regensburg in readiness for defense, but also mobilized his strong support among the Saxon nobility, to which the Margrave Gunther von Merseburg , Ekbert the One-Eyed and the Wettin Dedi belong. Otto then moved to Bavaria with an army and besieged Regensburg. Heinrich could not withstand the siege for long, and he fled to Duke Boleslav II of Bohemia .
- In Regensburg in July, after Heinrich was deposed, Otto made far-reaching decisions to reorganize the southern German duchies. Otto I of Swabia is installed as Duke in Bavaria, which is reduced in its territorial population by almost a third. As a result of this measure, the Duchy of Carinthia is newly created, with which the Luitpoldinger Heinrich III. is enfeoffed by Bavaria , and the Ostmark goes to the Babenberger Luitpold . With the withdrawal of the counties of Verona and Friuli, Bavaria has lost its considerable influence in northern Italy and on royal Italian policy.

During this uprising, the conspirators set fire to the Candianos palace, which then spreads uncontrollably and also destroys the churches of San Marco , San Teodoro and Santa Maria di Zobenigo as well as over 300 houses. On the following day, Pietro Orseolo , who probably took an active part in the overthrow of his predecessor, was elected the new Doge of Venice in the church of San Pietro di Castello .

- October 1 : After the death of his father al-Hakam II , Hisham II becomes the third caliph of Córdoba at the age of 10 . His mother Subh and Jafar al-Mushafi, the first minister, are provisionally reigning for him. With the support of General Ghalib and the court secretary Almansor , the eunuchs are prevented from putting a brother of al-Hakam II on the throne.
Byzantine Empire
- January 10 : The Byzantine emperor Johannes Tzimiskes dies, probably of typhus, possibly poisoned at the instigation of the court ruler Basileios Lakapenos , who rises as the regent of the new emperor Basil II to become the most powerful man in the empire. Immediately afterwards, General Bardas Scleros is proclaimed emperor by his troops and marches on Caesarea in Anatolia. Basileios Lakapenos thereupon calls Bardas Phokas the Younger back from exile and puts him at the head of the imperial army.
