Sanjō ( Japanese 三条 天皇 , Sanjō-tennō ; * February 5, 976 - † June 5, 1017 ) was the 67th Tennō of Japan (June 13, 1011-29 January 1016).

His proper name was Okisada ( 居 貞 ). He was the second son of Reizei -tennō. He was the father of Empress Teishi , who was the wife of Go-Suzaku -tennō and the mother of Go-Sanjō -tennō.

Its political base was not strong. His father was sick and his mother's family had almost no power. The politician Fujiwara no Michinaga held de facto power. Although Sanjō was a nephew of Michinaga (the mother of Sanjō was a sister of Michinaga; she had already died in Sanjō's childhood and so he was relatively little influenced by his maternal line), both opinions were often contrary. Michinaga therefore put pressure on Sanjō to resign. Like his father, Sanjō was often sick. At the end of his life he went blind. In 1016, Sanjō finally resigned with the agreement that his older son should be appointed as his successor. Michinaga promised, but after Sanjō's death, Michinaga arbitrarily withheld the promised throne from Sanjō's son.
