Byzantine Empire
- March 24th : The rebellion of Bardas Scleros against the Byzantine emperor Basil II and his regent Basil Lakapenos collapses after the defeat against the imperial troops supported by Dawit II of Tao-Klardschetien under Bardas Phokas in the battle of Pankalia . Bardas Scleros manages to escape to Syria.
Republic of Venice
- November: One year after his election, Vitale Candiano abdicates as Doge of Venice and retires as a monk in the monastery of San Ilario. He dies just four days after entering the monastery. Tribuno Memmo is elected as his successor . He is a compromise candidate on which the two warring camps of the imperial-friendly Candiano and Orseolo supporters, who are oriented towards Byzantium, can finally agree.

- June 8th : The West Franconian King Lothar has his underage son Ludwig V raised to be co-king. His attempt to set up a sub-kingdom for Ludwig in Aquitaine was unsuccessful.
