Luke Stylites

Lukas Stylites (* 879 in Attia, Phrygia ; † 979 near Chalcedon ) was a Byzantine monk who led a hermit life as a stylite ("pillar saint"). He is a saint of the Greek Orthodox Church . His feast day is December 11th .

Life

In 879 Lukas was born in a well-to-do family in Phrygia , where he lived in his father's house. As a stratiot he fought u. a. against the invasion of the Bulgarians under the leadership of Tsar Simeon I into the Byzantine Empire .

He then became a monk in the Kyminas Monastery on Mount Olympos in Bithynia . Later he left the monastery to live as a hermit on a pillar in the wilderness. At the request of the bishop, he moved his stay near the imperial capital Constantinople , where for forty years he became a spiritual guide for many people seeking advice .
