The Battle of Pankalia was fought between the Byzantine troops , who were loyal to the Byzantine Emperor Basil II , and the troops of the rebel general Bardas Skleros . It took place west of Caesarea in the Subject of Charsianon on March 24, 979. In a surprise attack, the emperor's army led by Bardas Phokas and reinforced by Georgian cavalry under Tornikios was able to inflict a crushing defeat on the rebels. Scleros himself was wounded by Phocas in single combat, but was able to retreat to Muslim territory. His rebellion quickly collapsed.
