Supported by Hugo Capet , he carried out a surprise attack on Aachen in June in order to capture Otto, who was currently there. Emperor Otto II and his wife Theophanu narrowly escape capture, they flee to Cologne. After Aachen was taken , the old imperial palace was plundered, and Lothar had the eagle on its roof turned from west to east in order to clearly demonstrate his superiority and claim to power. Then he withdraws again and dismisses his army.
- Lothar's coup led to a massive counter-attack by Otto, who - in order to set himself apart from the deceit of his adversary in terms of propaganda - formally announced his counterattack on Lothar's empire with the aim of installing Karl as king for October 1st . A resolution to this effect is passed at an imperial assembly in Dortmund in July, and the campaign begins as planned. However, the West Franconian side does not allow a field battle. The invading army was able to capture the Attigny , Soissons and Compiègne palaces and set them on fire, and also to conquer the city of Laon, but failed in the siege of Paris , which was defended by Hugo Capet. The onset of winter and illnesses force the Ottonian army to retreat, and when crossing the Aisne, Otto's rearguard is attacked and defeated by Lothar's troops.
