Bagrat III.
Bagrat III. (* around 963 ; † 1014 ) was King of Abkhazia from 978 to 1014 and King of the United Georgia from 1008 to 1014 . He is the son of Gurgens von Kartli and the Abkhazian king's daughter Guranducht.
Life
After Bagrat was King of Abkhazia from 978 , he finally inherited Kartli after the death of his father Gurgen and called himself King of Kings, which remained the official title of the ruling Georgian king until the end of the 15th century.
In order to secure the newly created unified Georgian state internally and externally, Bagrat implemented decisive measures. Domestically, the stubborn aristocracy was put in their place, while foreign policy Kakheti and Heretia were annexed. But the new power of the Georgian state inevitably had to meet the resistance of the Byzantine Empire , to whose sphere of influence Georgia had long belonged. Even under Bagrat's son Giorgi I , there were armed conflicts between the two powers.
