Louis Katzenstein

Louis Katzenstein (born August 27, 1824 in Kassel , † October 18, 1907 there ) was a German painter.

Life

After an accident, Katzenstein could no longer pursue his profession as a businessman. But already during his convalescence one discovered his artistic abilities.

Then Katzenstein trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kassel. In 1846 he went to Paris and became a student of Léon Cogniet . In the following year Katzenstein went on a study trip to Italy and also visited Rome for a long time . There he soon became a member of the German Art Association .

At the end of 1848 he returned to Kassel. But in the spring of 1850 Katzenstein traveled to Rome again. In the meantime he had found his style with genre painting .

The King of Portugal , Ferdinand II , invited Katzenstein to Lisbon in 1852 and commissioned him to do his portrait.

In addition, Katzenstein was also active as a writer.

Louis Katzenstein died on October 18, 1907 in Kassel at the age of 83.
