Iberian Peninsula
- Army leader Almansor sacked the city of León from the Caliphate of Córdoba and had the city burned down. Then he sacked Zamora and Sahagún and had the monasteries of Eslonza and Sahagún destroyed.
- On a pilgrimage to Rome, Oliba Cabreta is moved to renounce worldly life and he joins the Montecassino Abbey as a Benedictine monk . His son Wilfried II becomes Count of Cerdanya and Conflent .
- The County of Berga is founded. Oliba de Besalú , another son of Oliba Cabreta, becomes the first count.
France
- Duke Karl of Lower Lorraine from the Carolingian dynasty , who was passed over in favor of Hugo Capet in the French succession last year , begins the battle for the throne: with the help of his illegitimate half-brother Arnulf, he takes the royal city of Laon . The local bishop Adalbero of Laon is imprisoned as is the king's widow Emma of Italy .

Russian Orthodox Church
- July 28th : Day of the baptism of Russia : Grand Duke Vladimir I , ruler of the Kievan Rus , receives the Orthodox baptism. Due to the trade, which is mainly focused on Constantinople , despite initial attempts at conquest by the Rus , close contacts were established with Byzantium , which led to Christian proselytizing and ultimately to the conversion of the Rus to the Orthodox faith . This creates the Russian Orthodox Church . In Kiev , pagan temples are destroyed and Slavic idols are thrown into the Dnieper.
