Adaldag

Adaldag , also Adelgis or Adelger , (* around 900; † April 28, 988 in Bremen ) was a monk of the Benedictine order and Archbishop of Hamburg - Bremen from 937 to 988.

Adaldag came from a noble Saxon family. Through his teacher and relative Adalward von Verden , he came to the court of Otto I , where he was a canon in Hildesheim and a member of the royal chapel. Before he was appointed Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen in 937, he was the King's Chancellor.

As archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen he was able to acquire the first suffragans , namely Schleswig , Ripen and Aarhus , for his archbishopric at the universal synod of Ingelheim in 948 . Around 968 the Diocese of Oldenburg was also subordinated to the Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen. The attempt of Archbishop Brun of Cologne to subordinate the Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen again to the Archdiocese of Cologne , Adaldag was able to fend off and in 966 obtain immunity for his Archdiocese. This ensured the final separation from the Archdiocese of Cologne. In the new suffragans he continued the mission started by his predecessors. The Slav uprising of 983 destroyed many successes.

He accompanied Otto I on his second Italian campaign from 961 to 965 and took part in the two councils at which Popes John XII. and Benedict V were deposed. The deposed Pope Benedict V was subordinate to Adaldag and, demoted to deacon, spent his old age in Hamburg. After Otto I's death, Adaldag was still very close to the Ottonians . From Rome in 965 he brought the relics of Cosmas and Damian to Bremen, which were kept in Bremen Cathedral until 1649 . A stamp that has long been regarded as the Adaldag seal is now assigned to the Archbishop of Mainz, Erkanbald .
