Benedict V (* in Rome ; † July 4, 965 or 966 in Hamburg ) was Pope of the Catholic Church from May 22 to June 23, 964 .

Life

Benedict was the son of the Roman Johannes from the Marcelli region. Benedict was considered a learned man, which earned him the nickname Grammaticus . He was founded by the Roman patriciate in 964 after the death of Pope John XII. initially elected Pope. However, Emperor Otto I demanded a restitution of Leo VIII , who had previously been expelled from Rome , because the Romans opposed that also by John XII. initially approved Privilegium Ottonianum would have violated. Nevertheless, Benedict was lifted to the papal throne. Pope Benedict tried to put an end to the shame of the last few years. After the conquest of Rome, the emperor had Benedict V deposed and Leo VIII reinstated by a Lateran synod at the end of June 964. Benedict was handed over to Emperor Otto I by the Romans on June 23 and presented as a prisoner at the synod. As invader , usurper and Eidbrüchiger accused he renounced defense and pleaded guilty. He was declared deposed and banned from Rome, demoted to deacon and placed under the supervision of the Hamburg Archbishop Adaldag , who was also present in Rome . As a prisoner of the emperor, he was taken to Hamburg by Adaldag. Adaldag treated Benedikt respectfully, but he still felt uncomfortable in the Nordic climate and is said to have said: “You cannot warm an Italian heart with you Hyperboreans .” Benedict also prophesied that Hamburg would be destroyed and devastated as long as its bones rest here and wild animals dwelt in the rubble. After he died a short time after his arrival in Hamburg on July 4, 965 (according to other information 966), his body was at the behest of Otto III. , by the later Bishop of Worms Razo , around 998 to Rome.

The Hamburgers erected a memorial for him, which with the empty tomb ( cenotaph ) was in Hamburg's Mariendom until 1805 .
