Invader

An antipope was designated as an invader in synodal proceedings , especially in the Middle Ages , and was thus excluded from the legal claim to the papacy. The definition of who was an antipope, however, mostly depended on the power position of the respective parties, and since the high Middle Ages also increasingly on the criterion of canonical election .
